What’s the Billionaire Productivity Secret and the Experimental Lifestyle?
“How do you become productive?”
Richard Branson leaned back and thought for a second. The tropical sounds of his private oasis, Necker Island, murmured in the background. Twenty people sat around him in rapt attention, wondering what a billionaire’s answer would be to one of the biggest questions – perhaps the biggest question – of business.
The group had been assembled by marketing impresario Joe Polish to brainstorm growth options for Richard’s philanthropic Virgin Unite. It was one of many new ambitious projects, Virgin Group already had more than 300 companies, more than 50,000 employess, and $25 billion per year revenue. In other words, Branson had personally built an empire larger than GDP of some developing countries.
Then he broke the silence:

So, what do you think Branson said?
Before I get to the oh-so simple answer, let’s examine something.
I touched on this in a previous post – the idea of experimentation and really living the experimental lifestyle (I mean isn’t that what lifestyle design is all about?) but let’s address a few things.
“Does history record any case in which the majority was right?”
What we are talking about here has nothing to do with being average – settling, living comfortably and not striving for any worthwhile goals.
I TRIED to settle, live comfortably – for years – and it left me living with this feeling like I had a permanent thorn in my side. It would itch, hurt, sometimes be unbearable pain but I tried to ignore it.
I knew deep down within myself that I could do more with my life – but I just tried to ignore that detail.
People say, follow your dreams, go after what you want, this is your life so live it!
Live in the moment, death awaits…
But do they mean it? Are they doing it?
Are they taking the steps that cause almost a trrifying state of uncertainty where they appear to almost be crazy because they actually DO go after their dreams – while the majority, sits, watches, smirks – while comfortably sitting with a thorn in their side?
I sit here and look out onto this amazing view right now – lush, green mountains in the distance – beautiful calm waters, the birds flying by and singing at sunrise and I hear the waves crashing. Costa Rica.
I think to myself – how in the hell did I really get here?
Then I laugh and say – I took that damn thorn out – STARED at it and said “no more.”
That’s enough of THAT.
Life is short, death DOES await and why am I living someone else’s life?
Do you realize that if you were to ask yourself, what is true?
Probably the single thing that any one person can agree on in this world (because beliefs abound by the millions), is that no matter what, no one can deny ONE thing.
We will all have a physical death at some point. EVERYONE. That is the TRUTH!
People can argue over everything else – have different beliefs – but that is just one undeniable fact.
You could say, it is the meaning of life – the goal of life.
So, if you face that truth – all those little fears, those thorns in the side become nothing – and the reality of our “life situation” is undeniable.
I knew for years that I felt different – and I bet everyone feels this way on some level.
I realize now though that the only way we really changed our lives was through an experiment.
Kind of funny, huh?
We didn’t know anyone that had done what we wanted to do – we didn’t know how or if it was possible to live on the beach, travel and be job free.
We read The Four Hour Work Week and literally just took it on faith that maybe, we could do it too.
It was more like asking “Why not?” rather than “why.”
“I love fools’ experiments. I’m always making them.”
– Charles Darwin
Funny thing happened though – when we did decided to change…everything changed around us. Suddenly, we met people that had what we wanted, and it showed us more and more of what was truly possible and we began to believe in our crazy dreams more and more.
And now I realize, that the way we live now is truly the experimental lifestyle.
Everything we do is a test, an experiment with the aim towards a particular direction.
From building our online empire, to traveling to remote places (and hoping not to get eaten by jaguars – that almost happened by the way last year!), to running really really fast and seeing how I feel – possibly trying a strange new fruit (I tried a Cashew fruit last year and I had never even HEARD of it until I saw it – You Can Read One Weird Thing To Do In Costa Rica On A Monday Morning About Those dang cashews!)
Imagine eating something you had never even heard of?
There was no way to know how my sensitive stomach would handle it!
But I ate it, and it was weird – and I was ok.
That’s kind of how it goes.
Think of what you want (big or small), and now to your best ability – reverse-engineer the process of getting it.
If you want to run a 5K at a certain time – you figure out how much time you have, the diet to folllow and the training to do and you course-correct as you go.
Same with other goals.
So if you want to know how to do what we do for example – travel, live on the beach, have more time freedom, live the internet lifestyle – then use the system we use, do the training IN the products, and take the necessary daily actions and course-correct along the way.
That’s what we did!
Ok, so what did Richard Branson say?
He was serious and elaborated: working out gave him at least four additional hours of productive time every day.
(excerpt from The Four Hour Body, Tim Ferriss)
What does that mean?
He had more time in the day to be PRODUCTIVE!
Therein lies the answer: ACTION.
Are you excited?
Because all that this really means is that nothing can stop you and you cannot fail – as long as you take action, course correct along the way and be willing to live outside of the “majority.”
Just remember one thing: Every step you take towards your dreams, whether you think it’s a mistake or failure, it’s NOT. It is literally one step closer to reaching your goal because you have learned and applied something new.
So, what do you think of Richard Branson’s answer?
Let me know in the comments!
